I suppose though my tolerance for S. park humor might be more than yours, but I also prefer a starighter 'punnier7 Simpsons type of humor than S. Park's in your face variety.

I guess I'll have to try and watch more of the new seasons to compare.

PS Speaking of watching, how do you do that? It seems on cable here in Tokyo that the Simpsons is less available than it used to be on the Fox network.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33409496.post-91745100768053068232007-08-07T12:40:00.000+09:002007-08-07T12:40:00.000+09:00I stop watching the Simpsons on a regular basis af...I stop watching the Simpsons on a regular basis after season 7. Kingsize Homer episode was my zenith.

I have season1-7 on DVD and that is it. For me the Simpsons have been over for a long time.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33409496.post-83329289751523103182007-08-05T05:52:00.000+09:002007-08-05T05:52:00.000+09:00Spot on analysis. The thing that spoiled it for me ...Spot on analysis.
The thing that spoiled it for me was when it went from being a sitcom that happened to be animated to a cartoonish show with many impossible situations and inconsistent characterizations.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33409496.post-67968510095149831852007-08-02T09:29:00.000+09:002007-08-02T09:29:00.000+09:00Thanks, Androo, for your comment and compliment. M...Thanks, Androo, for your comment and compliment. My husband has similar issues watching new episodes now. The ones he sat through with me were a bit of a trial for his patience and eventually he just couldn't deal with it anymore.

Both my husband and I were hoping the degradation in later seasons was linked to the movie getting the best material since it was 3 years in the making but season 18, while it had a few good ones (the 24 parody and the Everquest-themed episode), wasn't all that encouraging despite the fact that it should have been written after the movie was put to bed.

I think that "Comic Book Guy" is an interesting defense against critics (as well as a parody of rabid fans of all shows and movies) but painting any fan who takes a thoughtful look at the show's shortcomings as such a type of person is simply a way to embarrass critics into keeping mum. It's tantamount to the writers putting their fingers and their ears and humming real loud so they don't have to take anything the fans say seriously.Sharihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17419851636570519145noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-33409496.post-55618878387434421232007-08-02T08:46:00.000+09:002007-08-02T08:46:00.000+09:00Another thoroughly enjoyable and well-thought post...Another thoroughly enjoyable and well-thought post. I grew up watching the Simpsons, from Season 1 when I was 10 and on. My brother and I had to sneak out of dinner to watch episodes on Sunday or Thursday nights. I could recite the entire dialog of my favorite episodes, often to the annoyance of anyone around. We were total Simpsons geeks.

Around 2002, we both noticed what we thought a sharp drop off in the quality and stopped watching. I haven't been able to stomach more than 3 or 4 minutes of any recent Simpsons episode without getting somewhat depressed that such an amazing show has fallen so far. I guess I never analyzed it to see why I thought it had become so unfunny, but a lot of your points seem to be on target. The self-referencing and overt commentary are the ones that bother me the most. I also agree that many of the storylines are re-used, to the point that I feel like the Comic Book Guy attempting to point this out.

I suppose I'll watch the movie eventually, but it certainly won't be getting any money from me. And way to put into words what SO MANY people out there must be thinking.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
